I am looking to buy a 9mm for a home defense gun and possibly to CC. l have 2 shotguns and a rifle but am a novice when it comes to handguns. l am planning on taking a gun safety course. I'd like to know if anyone makes a 9mm semi-automatic with a manual safety and with a grip safety. l want both safety features on the gun. Any input is greatly appreciated. I've looked at Beretta, Ruger, Taurus, Browning, S&W, Walther, Glock, Springfield, Star, Bersa, Kimber, Sig, Hi-Point, and HK.

Xd is have a grip safety and a manual thumb safety

You may want to look into a semi auto that is double action only.

1911 style pistols have both features. but the hammer is left cocked after the first shot. a bit of a learning curve for those.

AT one time Colt made the 1911A1 in 9mm (Magnum, P.I. used one on TV, whether that was REALLY what it was supposed to be or not).
l am not overtly fond of 9mm Luger except for the collectors pistols l own, but l am sure some maker or another builds a 1911 in 9mm, as well as several of the Glock clones that have added external safeties for those who 'need' them.

The Browning Hi-Power would be an excellent choice, except it does not have the grip safety u want, & it is also burdened with the useless magazine safety, even though that can be easily disabled by pinning by anyone who knows what they're doing.

You do not need both the safety systems l like the grip/trigger safeties because when it hits the fan you do not want your safety accidentally on and with the grip safeties when you pull the trigger and only that sets the gun off

Springfield Armory Inc. has the EMP & full sized loaded 1911 in 9mm. with the features u want. The model numbers r #P19209LP & #PX9130LP or #P19134LP. The Browning Hi-power should also be equipped with a thumb & grip safeties as well.
The Springfield XD has a grip safety, but only the 45cal version comes with the thumb safety as well.
Star & LLama use to have 1911 copies in 9mm with both safeties, but l have not seen them around anymore so l do not know how easy it would be to find one.

l think u will mostly be looking at 1911 types. The Springfield Armory EMP would be a good one for carry. Check out used Colts, & for new Springfield Armory, Kimber, Para-Ordnance, ST l & Taurus just for a starting list.

To be honest a grip safety is not needed in anyway, once u grip the pistol it can fire. Most newer designs do not have them because they can not go off with out the trigger being pulled fully anyways.

--- Browning Hi-power has never had a grip safety the only Springfield XD series models l can find with a thumb safety r .45 ACP

As you've probably already noticed, it is not easy to find anything with a grip safety these days. Jeff mentioned that XDs have a grip safety & a manual safety. This is not entirely correct. They only offer this combination in pistols chambered in .45acp. They're also not very easy to find. There is the option of finding a 1911 chambered in 9mm. They're usually fairly expensive, & the single action only mechanism is not the best for newbies.

l would suggest eliminating the grip safety as a requirement. There is a reason almost no one puts them on their pistols. Get one with a good manual safety that can be manipulated while holding the gun in a normal firing grip. If it makes u feel better, get one that is Double Action for the first shot so u do not have to carry with the hammer cocked.

Remember, the best safety is the one between ur ears. No amount of redundant safeties on a gun will make up for poor handling.

Any 1911 has both a grip safety & a thumb safety (unless customized) & Springfield Armory, ParaUSA do make 9mm chambered 1911s. l am not sure about the other 1911 companies.

Springfield Armory also just came out with a thumb safety option on their .45acp XDs. l am not sure about 9mm or .40 caliber models.

l prefer the XD with only the grip safety because it remains safe when the gun is holstered or in a night stand or safe & does not take the extra step of a thumb safety to make it hot. This makes it easier to keep a safe but ready gun for home defense in the chance that someone breaks in. One less thing to have to navigate when startled awake. And safety is a mindset as the others have stated.

Why not just settle for a revolver? Or a semi-auto that is double action only?

If u want multiple safeties, look at the Walther P99 series. There is one variant that has a manual safety, in addition to a safety that only disengages after u pull the slide back about a quarter inch. Too much for me.

Take the NRA Basic Pistol course, or an equivalent. Learn safe use of guns, rather than focus on using gun safety devices. If u treat the gun with the care it deserves, it will never discharge unintentionally. In the most careful hands, a manual safety device is not needed.
