l recently let a pal of mine try out my new witness and for some reason or another everyone of his shots hit to the left. They were grouped nicely.. just off to the left rather than centered.

He is new to guns an l am trying to figure out whats causing this. l let him shoot about 50 rounds and l watched him closely.. did not look like he was pulling to the left when he squeezed.

He is right handed and he aims with his right eye. l am really starting to wonder if he is cross dominant. l have not had an issue with this but after reading the tests on the internet.. there seems to be some conflicting information.

In your opinion which is the most simple and accurate test? l really wanna get my pal into shooting but l fear he will loose interest if he cant put that group onto the target lol.

The dominant eye is the one you look out of, jeez!

Stick your thumb out while holding your hand at arms length. Close your right eye, then close your left. Whichever eye does not make your thumb move in your vision is your dominate.

Hold your finger front of your face (about 7 inches) with both eyes open, close your right eye then your left. If it moves when you close your left eye you are right eye dominant, or visa versa.

have him close or cover one eye and have him read a chart, like at a eye doctor and get him to read with the other eye afterwards, which ever eye sees better is usually the dominate one.

Have him hold up his has with his thumbs touching & index fingers touching. Tell him to look at u through the hole. If he is looking at u with the right eye he is right dom left eye left dom.

l have a feeling it is not dominance it is likely he is gripping a little different then u r or absorbing the recoil differently. l have a friend that can trade .22 pistols with me & we both hit fine. Our .45s my .357 & his .44 Mag. r different. We're close but we do hit slightly different at anything beyond about 10-15 yards.

If this is the case & he is consistently left just teach him about different people hitting different places & about kentucky windage. For paper targets u could stick a target spot up the correct distance to the right of the center on the main target & he can aim at that. Just remember to make a bigger deal of the grouping being good rather then being in the center of the target. As long as he knows he is doing well & the issue is only the equipment being set up for someone else l bet u will keep him interested.

yeah. have him do the thumbs up & align his thumb with a tree or lamp post or something, with both eyes open. get him to close one. then open both & re-align. then get him to close the other. whichever eye the image appears to move the LEAST is his dominant eye, the one sending the most information to the brain.

if he grouped well then it could just be the way he is holding ur rifle, as l assume it is tuned to you. he can solve this by counter-aiming (aiming however many inches to the right) or by sighting in a rifle for him specifically.

Your friend is probably having trouble making the connection between his brain & the sight picture. Using an inert pistol( plastic trainer) or toy pistol, have him aim at the center of ur dominant eye & apply trigger pressure to simulate firing. If the sight picture is not what it should be , simply reach out & adjust it so he can see what he should be seeing. Once his brain makes the connection, his group should move to center mass. Also make sure all his grip pressure is front to back. Right hand finger-tip pressure(milking) will cause the result you're describing. You be able to see this movement during the process for checking sight picture.

stand in front of the target and tell him ''do not shoot here.''

The easiest test, since you're already on the shooting line is to have him close one eye while shooting & see if the group change place. If it does, then he just closed his dominant eye.

There r many tests for eye dominance, the thumb method used above is good, he do need to be honest to himself with that one.

Another one that is almost foolproof is to have him stand facing u a good 10-20 feet away from you. Keep both eyes open. Have him place both arms in front of him, put one palm on top of the other to make a hole between the thumbs & the index fingers. Have him look at ur nose, & raise his arms up & center ur nose in the hole. In the mean time, u need to watch his head for any movements. His head should not move around, when l see head movements like that means he is hunting to get the eye that he desired to see. As he look through the hole at ur nose, u should be able to also see his dominant eye through that hole.
