And if so, how do hunters get their guns? l understand that the gun laws in both countries are very strict. Which types of guns can you have, and which are illegal?
Thanks for the link, username. So, it appears that guns are not actually banned in the UK and Australia as is so often stated here. I am glad the great hunting tradition in the UK is still alive. Maybe Y!A citizens can stop harassing the US about guns, since they have them in other ''civilized'' countries too.
l also wonder why the liberal US media keeps reporting that guns are banned in those nations.
Thanks Oz M for the thorough explanation. l really appreciate it. We hear a great number of stories here, but it seems that most of them are not accurate. It seems as though proof of need, licensing, and registration are the main differences between the current US, UK and Australian laws.

l am UK and it is a no to hunting now. There was fox hunting until a couple of years ago with rich country folk who are allowed guns for work in agriculture, but it has recently been banned.

Guy below: l like our government. Just not Gordon brown.
I've read 1984 fyi and l do not think our government is going like that. You hate our feminist anti white male government? *rolls eyes* go back to play with your rascist BNP buddies.

Not in the UK. All hunting is banned by this worthless government - even fox hunting!

Hunting is allowed in Australia, but not in the UK.

It was banned in the UK in 2004, l believe.

Australians are allowed to own guns for hunting purposes, but not for ''shooting sports'' or ''self defense'' purposes.

In england guns are kipped at clubs and they use shot guns doubles or over-unders. In Australia guns can be kept at home but you can have one rifle and one shot gun of the two barreled type.

In the Uk, hunting foxes is banned, but hunting by foot with guns, e.g. shotguns is legal on prvate land, air rifles can be usd but on private land for hunting wih the owners consent, also no bow hunting allowed in the Uk, in australia Bowhunting is a big sport, but hunting native animals e.g. Crocodiles, Wallabies, Kangaroos are banned all natianoal animals are exempt from being hunted.

it is illegal at least in australia to have or use a semi auto rifle, that is why the Lee Enfield bolt action rifles are so popular there, that is all l know.

If u jump through the right hoops & pay the correct fees, u can still hunt in the UK. They have incredible season on things that they r trying to get rid of, like non-native deer. Axis & sika & the like that have escaped over the past few centuries from game preserves. l know at least one regular guy over there who hunts every couple of weeks. But getting the proper forms & permits seems to be a long & arduous process, with fees, classes & other stupidity.

Down under still has hunting, with fewer hoops to jump through. But it is still restrictive. Rabbits r really popular to blast. As r feral cats & feral donkeys. They have had all kinds of formerly domestic animals get loose, & they r wrecking the environment for the native species. IIRC, they also have some limited hunting of native animals for population control.

Most of the above r wrong. Hunting is not entirely banned in the UK. The 2004 act was against hunting with dogs (that is using the dogs to make the kill, as in fox hunting or hare coursing). Hunting with firearms is still permitted, as is the shooting of vermin, providing the landowner consents & the quarry is not out of season.

This web-page below is a directory of links about hunting in the UK. Try following some of those for more information.

The given regarding hunting in Australia r also not entirely correct.

The Federal Government forced all states to bring their firearm legislation in line with the desires of the Australian Government, essentially creating almost uniform laws across Australia.

Very little changed in the Northern Territory, as she already had the tightest gun laws in all of Australia, while in Queensland & Tasmania, it was a shock to the system, where people had to be licensed for the first time & all firearms registered & certain classes banned.

Australia wide, possession & use of semi-automatic rifles r banned, except for a very small number of private individuals that can prove the need for such a weapon. These include professional hunters like those that exterminate vermin & feral animals. The weekend hunter can not obtain such a permit/license.

The earlier answer given about popularity of Enfield .303 is is only because there r heaps out there, they r cheap, very accurate even for their age, robust, tough & reliable. Ammunition is getting very expensive now as new ammo is no longer made so commonly any more. Went from 60 cents a round to over $2 in less than 10 years.

It may vary from State to state, but certainly in most of Australia, there is no limitation as to the number of firearms u can have, as long as justification of ownership can be established. For example, a person in Melbourne or Sydney would have difficulty in obtaining permits as genuine ownership is only granted if the firearm is used in sports or hunting. This means the 'gun in the cupboard' is no longer permitted.
a family heir look firearm is only permitted when not being used for hunting or sports by way of having it made safe. (Permanently making it so it can not be fired)

All firearms must be stored in a prescribed gun cabinet built of a minimum standard.

Without going in to all the fine & specific details, the law does not stop any person from having or using a firearm as long as that use can be proven, justified & the person is suitable to have one. (eg, mental defectives & convicted violent people can not have one) Also required is permission to use that firearm, such as membership at a sports shooting club, or permission from the land owner to go hunting there.
