l would say 30'06 with Nosler tips or at least .308 with polymer tip ammunition.

Johnny, it depends on where ur hog hunting at. I've hunted hogs in the Louisiana swamps with a 44 mag carbine, in Texas with a 338 or with dogs & a knife, in Mississippi with a 44 mag revolver or 444 Marlin rifle. I've seen hogs killed with a 22 Hornet when their in a hog trap but there is no sport to that. A 223 will take hogs but l think I'd limit it to 100 pounds or less. Personally l think a 30 caliber is the minimum to use for humane kills on hogs. Something like a 308 or 30/30 would be the minimum I'd recommend to you. l prefer handgun or knife hunting hogs while running them with dogs.

the .223 is not adaquate, I'd use a 30-30 lever action if hunting in short fields & brush. .308, .270 or 7mm mauser for longer ranges, but the .308 works as a good bush gun too, because it can be used in short barrels with good accuracy.
l would get a .308 with a 20 inch barrel with see through scope mounts, short for running through the woods & able to use iron sights at close range, but plenty of range & accuracy for longer ranges.
the savage 11 & 110 series have what ur looking for, for a 30-30, look at a marlin 336, dependable & powerful on hogs.

At what range? How big of boars? Are u going to be on the ground or in a tree stand?

l know guys that hunt them with .22LRs & dogs. l know guys that chase them down with knives & spears. l think they r a tad nuts, but it takes all kinds. As for calibers, anything over a .30-30 in power should work just fine for the average hunter. l have used .35 Remington & .300 Savage, with good success. A .308 would do just fine. l would go with something larger than 6mm/.243, as having a bit more mass in ur bullet will help u anchor them. But if u feel the need to go get a .375 H&H to hunt them, by all means, do so. They r not bulletproof, & magnums r overkill for them. But whatever floats ur boat. If this if ur first rifle for hunting, l would recommend .308 Winchester in any of the decent bolt actions. A Stevens 200 by Savage is a good starter gun. But any of the more expensive brands will work as well. Winchester, Remington, Ruger, Savage. Any of them. Or go cruise the local gun stores or pawn shops & look at used guns.

A .223 does not have enough terminal energy to humanely kill a good sized boar. The 223 is great for coyotes & chucks & prairie dogs, but not boar. Most states do not allow 223 for deer hunting either. For caliber, u could go with 257 Roberts, 6.5x55 Swede, 25-06,270,30-06 or 308. If it is simply for boar & deer sized game u do not need a magnum cartridge.

The 270 & the 30-06 give u the most flexibility on bullet range, but all those calibers would work well to 300 yards.

Savage/Stevens r wonderful rifles, as r the Howa 1500/Weatherby Vangards. Either rifle choice is good & affordable.

My brother sold me his hog pistol. It is a Springfield Armory .38 Super. He moved to the same gun in .45. l went out with him once and watched him brain a hog at a conversation distance with that Super. It ate good. But from what l read in the testosterone filled gun magazines, you guys have to use something with more horse-power, like a .30-30 or sumptin.

there is not a hog ever born or bred that can stand up to a WELL PLACED .223 round l have killed many hogs with mine. l still recommend a .308, but if you use well built bullets, a .223. is good enough within it is range.

No, 223 is not enough. Anything from 6.5x55 on up will do nicely. Hogs are normally hunted in close cover, so if you're buying specifically for hogs, look for something short and handy rather than a full-length rifle. The best hog gun I've ever seen belongs to an old classmate of mine: an 8x57 side-by-side. It is hard for me to justify spending the money it costs for a double just to shoot hogs, but I've drooled over that rifle for ages.

Ask 10 guy is this & ur going to get 10 ...

At what distance will u be hunting hog?

Are the wild hogs in ur area small, medium, large or big hogs..

Different area is of the USA have different size hogs...

For close range the 30/30 would be a good choice --- For longer distance shots consider a .270...

If u want to hunt close range big hogs then consider a lever gun chambered in 45/70..
