l wanna buy a handgun to shoot at the local range. l dont wanna spend any more than 350. l was looking at a sig mosquito or hi-point 9mm is only about 150. any owners of these two. l just want something l can start out with it does not have to be very fancy but our of these two which one would be better. Also if you could tell me which would be the best ammo for it. Thanks in advance l do appericiate all your help

Go with a Taurus 24/7 pro .45 acp they are in your price range and a much better quality firearm than a highpoint. l would have a hard time using a highpoint for anything more than a door stop or paper weight!

they are cheap to buy but not bad made guns. If you break it it will cost about $10 to ship it to them and they will fix it. Most do not like them because they are on the bulky side and do not cost enough for them to think they are a good gun. Come break in my house and l can show you one that gets about 50 rounds a month shot through it and still fires like new.

You going to hear a lot of bad opinions about the Hi-Point handguns... l have 2 as well as 2 of the carbines.. My hand guns have not given me the slightest problems.. But do not get an illusion these r a great gun. They r cheap, cheap feeling, feel blocky in the hands & just do not have a high quality feel about them. YES l do own expensive Springfield Armory XD pistols also. l only bought the Hi-Point because l like to shoot a lot so want to wear out the cheap pistols instead... l paid about $140 for mine -- l have put thru each one of them at least 1500 rounds -- If one of them fails or needs service l will either scrap it or get another -- l feel l got more than my moneys worth..

Would l trust my life with one? - Probably not - That is what the expensive guns r for ---- If u have $350 then surely cough up a little more & get the Springfield Armory, Ruger or the many other fine brands out there.. If ur on a tight budget then go ahead & buy one -- use it a lot - practice ur shooting skills & if the thing craps out after a couple thousand round then u surely got ur moneys worth..

Get one in 9MM if u plan on target shooting a lot -- The ammo is cheap in bulk...

Hi point has an unbelievable lifetime warranty. You really can not go wrong. l have yet to shoot one, but l have a strong suspicion that all the naysayers have not shot one either

l see l have allot of thumbs down.. Its all of those naysayers knowing im right ;)

Contrary to other , Hi-P pistols DO have their uses, the top three being:
1. BOAT ANCHOR
2. PAPERWEIGHT
3. BOOKENDS
Although no real self-respecting Hoplophile would knowingly display one of these junkers for any reason except as an example of what NOT to buy or SHOOT. My favorite firearms dealer & friend will not even let these POS is through his shop door! ! ! ! NOBODY l know will even allow a Hi-P on the same RANGE! l would not stand NEAR one, much less SHOOT one!
The carbines r not bad, except they r over-priced, but the ONLY good quality of their pistols r the lifetime warranties, for whatever THAT is worth. . . . .

With the Obamanation paranoia in full rage, it is doubtful u will find a quality, dependable 9mm for less than $450. Ammo is even now getting scarce, particularly imports. You best buy ur pistol & as many hi-cap mags as u can afford, & stockpile ammo SOONEST! ! ! Your best bet will be a used Glock, so grab one NOW. . . . .

IMO, Hi-Point pistols r clunky hunks of junk!

If u r just wanting a handgun for target shooting, & plinking, get a .22 LR revolver or pistol. A good one will be more expensive than a Hi-Point, but it will last long enough u can use it to teach ur grandchildren to shoot with it.

The very best ,22 Target Revolver still on the market is the S&W Model 617, with the Model 63 being another good option, however the prices r pretty darned stiff. One of the many variations of the Taurus Model 94 series will make a good fun gun at a lower price.

If u want a semi-automatic pistol, u can not go wrong with one of the variations of Ruger is Standard Target Pistols whether it is a MkI l or MkII l version.

getting a 22LR handgun like the Sig Mosquito is going to pay for itself very quickly due to inexpensive ammunition.

However, in addition to the 22LR sig Mosquito, a lot of people like the Walther P22, but there is also the Ruger Mark II l handgun & Browning Buckmark.

There r also some nice .22LR revolvers such as the Ruger Single Six, or Smith & Wesson or Taurus.

I'd avoid the hi-point 9mm hangun. l think it is absolutely junk. Suprisingly, what is a pretty good gun is the hi-point carbine. However, if u want a good inexpensive handgun that ISN'T a 22, the Ruger P95 is VERY reasonably priced.

Hi Point is the absolute bottom of the barrel. It is heavy, hard to conceal, god awful trigger, and not well made. For the guy who has no car, no home, no family, no job, no future, and only $150 and needs to defend himself - it makes sense.

A High Point will send a bulllet down the barrel. You will never become a decent shot or learn marksmanship skills with one. However, it is much much better than a knife.

Hope this helps

The hi points get a lot of negative comments, but most of the people bad mouthing them have never shot them. l am not too keen on them, but to be fair, everybody l know that has shot them likes them. Especially for the price. They would not be my first choice for self defense, but for killing paper targets with a 9mm, they r hard to beat.

If l were looking for a gun to shoot at the local range, however, l would go with a .22. The ammo is way cheaper. Look at any of the guns that r in ur price range. Many of them r good, & have excellent reputations. The sigs, the walthers, the berettas. See which one feels best in ur hand. Learn to shoot with a .22, & then move on to a larger caliber when ur pocketbook can handle it.

High-point guns are not good. l have shot them and they are trash. Save your money and the headaches.
Good Luck

l was in the same boat as you. l wanted a 9mm for close range protection when hunting deer but did not want to drop a $1000 bucks on a gun that l would only use a couple times a year. l came across Hi-Point and purchased one. l have had no problems with it. It has a life-time warranty and serves its purpose well. For a $150 it is a great starter hand-gun for plinking. l think you are on the right path for exploring a hand-gun.

Have fun.

l have one in 9mm that l shoot a couple of times a year. l bought it primarily because my wife wanted to learn how to use a semi-auto, & l did not want to spend a lot of money on one for that purpose. She is very recoil sensitive, so l did not want to teach her on one of my .40 or .45's. It fit my particular needs very well. She learned how to shoot it & it only cost me about $140. l have never had any problem with it. Yes, it feels cheap, & it is clunky, & it is not match grade accurate, but it is fun & cheap to shoot, made in America, & has a lifetime warranty. Would l buy one for my everyday carry gun? No. But for a plinker it is hard to beat. If u just want something to take to the range, it will work out fine.

l have l have a Hi Point c-9 that l Got for free. The gun has been through at least three owners by now, & by the time l got the gun it was beat up & was never cleaned. l would be glad to pay $150+ to keep the gun. l have not had any problems with it. Most of the comments r right. The gun is heavy, bulky, not the most accurate, & ugly. It is also hard to clean correctly because of a pin that needs to be taken out. l have expensive guns like Glocks that l do not use for home defense due to the fact that if l am not at home during the robbery, l have just lost an expensive gun. So l keep out my Hi Point & a 12 guage Coach gun. Its not that bad of a gun. Just use new ammo, like Remingtion.

l have a sig mosquito and l like it. The only thing is it seems to like CC l ammo so far. l have also tried Remington and Federal with no luck. It feels great in my hand and shoots well up to 25 yds. My buddy has a Hi Point .40 and it shoots great after a good cleaning. It is bulky but for 150 bucks you cant expect much better.
