Hi l have a remington 300 ultra mag whats the best scope and type as far as magnification and size?

What scope u get depends primarily on what distances u will be shooting. The 300 Ultra Mag can be used from just under 100 yards out to (if u r an exceptional shot) around 1000 yards.

Alot of people will say u should only get a Leupold scope but l have found, that for the money, Nikons r just as good. You can get a ProStaff 3-9X for shots out to 200 yards or so, a BuckMaster in 3-9X, 4-12X, or out to 6-18X for longer shots with a Bullet Drop Reticle or if u r taking the realllly long shots, the Nikon Monarch in 6-24X is about the best u can get. Now, these scopes will run from $150 at the least for the ProStaff to $650 for the top of the line Monarch.

Now, a place that a lot of people mess up is in the mounts. The best scope in the world is junk if the mounts & rings r not rock solid, especially with a cannon like the .300 Mag. Here is where l recommend the name Leupold. Get a 1-piece mount & rings to anchor that scope to the gun & it will be just like that scope was welded to it.

You can expect to pay 1/2 as much as the gun costs on good optics & up to as much as the gun costs; but once u have good glass on that rifle u will have a setup to last for year after year after year.

Bushnell makes a scope called The ''dawn & dusk'' & l have had one on my Remington for about 5 or 6 years & l love it! It is inexpensive & has 3x9 power & gathers light for early or late day vision. By far the best scope that l have had & my buddy liked mine so much that he sold his Simmons & got the Bushnell. If u hunt in the snow & rain like we do, u will need to buy the flip-up lense covers. You will like the scope. l promise & u will like the price even better. Good Luck!

You have not begun to look at your requirements. What are you shooting with it, and under what conditions?

l agree with John De Witt. It all depends on what u plan to use ur rifle for. If u r going to be hunting mostly forested land, then something with a lower magnification would be appropriate (2-7x or 3-9x). On the other hand, if u r going to be shooting longer distances, then a higher magnification like a 4.5-16x might do the trick.

Also, l personally have been leaning toward the fixed power scopes these days. For the ''woods'' l go with a straight 4x. For open fields, then l step up to a 6x. For varmint caliber rifles, then either a 10x or a 12x.

Ok, but one thing l will recommend to u is the brand of scope. l probably sound like a broken record here, but Leupold is the way to go in terms of the most value for ur money.

Leopold VXII l provides 95% of performance available in a scope at reasonable price. Leopold dual dovetail mounts are solid and streamlined.

If weight is an issue go with 40mm objective, otherwise 50mm. Either 3.5-10x or 4.5-14x would be appropriate for long range big game hunting with 300 RUM.
