Because it will ruin the meat

Mainly because that is the part that ''sportsmen'' like to hang on their walls and it would not look all that attractive full of buckshot holes, now would it?

well if it is a buck you could harm the antlers. Some people mount the whole head and neck instead of just keeping the antlers. If the face gets shot up then it will be hard for a taxidermist to fix it if possible.

so you can mount the head w/o it looking like crap

Practically speaking, the probability of a miss is magnified greatly with a head-shot. The most vital organs of a deer cover roughly the size of a dinner plate, whereas the brain is smaller.

Ditto on the mounting/trophy considerations.

it will ruin back strap or any other part, such as :THE HEAD IT SELF: it will ruin a perfect mount on the wall
Kickshaw     Reply with quote
going for the vital organs is the best way imo

The brain is a very small target and easily missed. If you miss the brain you end up just wounding the deer. Example.. little bit low and you break its jaw and it runs away and starves to death because it cannot eat.

Because its not deer season.

Practically speaking, if u r shooting a doe for meat l do not think it matters. l had an uncle who almost always killed his deer with a head shot. He was a bow hunter & was used to not taking a deer unless he was close enough to kill it with a bow, therefore the shots he was able to get during gun season allowed him to take the deer with a head shot. l personally saw a guy kill a deer with broadside shot the just clipped the muzzle behind the nose.(with a slug) The shot knocked the deer out & he had time to climb out of his tree stand & shoot it in the neck.

First, you're in pretty bad shape if you're getting ur information from TV entertainment. Maybe u should take up hunting to get out of the house more.
Sport hunting contains within it the ethical requirement that a deer be killed as quickly & humanely as possible. That normally means trying to shoot it in the heart. While it is possible to kill one with a head or neck shot, the odds of the shot being off just a tiny bit & thereby resulting in a wounding but not quickly fatal shot is too great in almost all circumstances.

Because hunters want to hang the head on the wall.

Wow, the level of ignorance here is pretty astounding! While a nice mount may be a minor consideration, l do not know of any hunters who only shoot deer for the mounts, & not the meat. If l ever did meet one, I'd likely beat them severely.

When u take a game animal, it is ur job as a sportsman to dispatch that critter as quickly, effectively, & painlessly as possible. ( that is why there r rules & laws governing minimum caliber sizes in many states) Frankly the head-shot is not an effective killing device. A deer is brain is pretty small so a direct brain shot would not be overly easy. If the shot was off by just a couple of inches, then the deer might suffer injuries that would cause them to run off & die a slow horrible death ( blindness, broken jaw, diminished hearing, slow bleed-out) .

A heart/lung shot or a neck shot presents a larger target & greater margin of error to kill the deer. Even gut shot deer ( back half of the body cavity) can run great distances & survive a surprisingly long time, just ask any hunter who has ever tracked a wounded deer.

if its a buck it ruins the antlers or if you want to mount it, with does it doesnt really matter, head or vitalss are both humane shots.
laser     Reply with quote
because if it is a big buck or a big doe it wont look really good to mount on your wall and if you shoot in the heart or lungs rather than the face it will go down faster because it is a more vital shot.
