I am buying a varmint rifle and can't decide which one to get? My choices so far are a 223 or 22-250.?

l will be shooting from 100 to 400 yards for coyotes and prairie dogs. l am going to get a Savage rifle no matter what caliber l decide. Any input would be appreciated.

Go with the .233! Excellent rifle.

personally l have a .17 its a great gun and shoots very flat, which is what sounds like you want, but out of the two you have there l would go with the 22-250 its a great coyote gun, but a little bit of an overkill for prairie dog

l like the .17 but the .204 rugar is a very cool one.

l am a 22-250 person myself. Shot coyotes, gophers, and even a couple of deer. Nice and flat shooting with no recoil. Works for me.

Out of the 2 u have listed, the 22-250 far out does the 223. 22-250 is what 70% of the varmint hunters rifles will be chambered in these days, & theres good reason.

If u thought any about leaving those 2 calibers, theres only one l would pick over the 22-250 & thats the 204 Ruger. It will shoot flatter but there is a drawback, The 204 is very fast out of the barrel therefore barrel life is less.

For the life of me l cant imagine a good reason to give everyone negitive marks, for whoever feels the need to do it, its worthless & does nothing to points or rep !

Good choice on the rifle by the way !

Good Luck & Happy Shooting!

Brandon, the Savage will do you well. From the two calibers you mentioned l would select the 223. Simply for the selection of available bullet weights.

If this is ur first varmint rifle, l would go with the .223. Ammo is cheaper & more readily available, recoil is less, barrel life is longer. If u do not plan to handload, u definitely should go with the .223.

The .223 & the .22-250 use the same bullets. The .22-250 runs about 400 feet per second faster, so the round shoots a little flatter & hits a little harder at longer ranges.

If you're shooting coyotes, calling them in close is part of the game. If u want the pelts, use a bullet of heavier construction for less pelt damage.

Proficiency with ur rifle is more important than caliber. Either round is a fine choice if u can make the shot.

You cant go wrong with the .22-250 great flat shooting rifle that you will be happy with

If you are considering a 22-250, do it right and get a 220 Swift.

l much prefer the .22-250, since it has more range and power than the.223. The .22-250 is much better for 400 yards shooting and for coyotes than the.223. Any .22 is sensitive to wind, however. l use a .243 on windier days.

Here is the sensible opinion...

Yes the 22-250 is superior to the .223 in reach & critter slaying power...

That being said l still prefer the .223 cartridge --- Its less expensive.. Of course for long range hunting use the expensive ammo but for close range critter slaying & target shooting that .223 bulk ammo is an absolute steal at the low prices u can get it at...

Look over this .223 cartridge guide...

If u r planning on being one of those super dedicated every shot counts varmint hunter then the 22-250 may be for you... l happen to target shoot more than l hunt so the .223 works for me..

l know budgets can be tight these days but consider this... Buy 2 rifles. One in .223 & the other in 22-250. That is what l did -- l like to shoot a lot so many of my firearms shoot cheap ammo.. Keeps my skills sharp without going broke. ---------- l see the guy above me mentioned the .243.. Good suggestion -- heres a little info on that cartridge too...

For u shooting range & distance either one would be a nice caliber. l had the same problem two years ago & went round & round with my friends.

50/50 split on the caliber, l ended up going with the 22-250 just for the fact l have longer ranges l can shoot where l am at. Do l regret it, not at all. l just shoot my girlfriends 223!!!!

However when l get my AR-15 it will be in 223. Quicker follow up shots if l missed with the bolt action Remy.

Both are good choices, but l prefer the farther reaching 22-250 myself.
The savage rifle will serve you well.

Definately the .22-250, faster, further, harder, longer, flatter. Just cuz some of these people are too poor to shoot the .22-250,doesnt make the .223 better. But also do yourself a favour, dont get a savage, get a good rifle.
