What kind of protection? Unless you're looking to carry it around in ur pants around town, buy a rifle, preferably a shotgun.
If you're using a gun to protect yourself, it is all about the ability to stop someone quickly. If u shoot someone with a 9mm handgun, it will make the person bleed. During the time it takes for him to bleed to death, he could a number of things, one of which could be killing you. With a shotgun, u have much better accuracy, & u cause much more damage. More damage means more of a chance for his body to decide it wants to shut down, or for him to give up. If you're buying a handgun for maneuverability, don't. You can not clear ur house by yourself. Your best bet would be to set yourself down in a room with ur shotgun & call the cops.
l suppose if you're also looking to kill hogs, u might want to look into some sort of high powered rifle instead of a shotgun.

if ur looking for a powerful gun that feels natural in ur hand go with a 45 (probably a 1911 or a colt comander). if u want a gun that will shoot every time u pull the trigger no matter what go with a glock (i'd go 40 cal) i would stay away from revolvers only because pistles with mags r much mor practical although revolvers r very reliable. it realy depends on what u want to do with it & how much time u want to spend taking care of it. price is a big issue too lol

Do u have experience with handguns already? If u do not really have much experience with them l would recommend a revolver in maybe a .357. Revolvers r simple to learn & operate. They r very reliable & can accommodate a range of different rounds.
If u have experience then u may also look at an auto in calibers like 9mm, .40S&W, 45acp, 10mm etc. The autos r usually a bit more picky about the type of ammo u have to use. The manual of arms is more complicated, but the trade off is that u can usually carry more shots in the gun.
It really depends on ur personal preference. In any case, if u have not had much background with handguns, l would recommend that u take a course on handgun safety. Also u should visit shooting ranges that rent guns & try several different types to see what u like best. After all, my perfect gun might not be a good choice for u at all.

You are asking two questions. For a hog, l would look at something with a bit of ''oomph .357 or .44 in a revolver, 10mm in an auto, like a Glock 20.
On self protection there are too many variables to answer properly.
If you could only buy one for both uses a .357 magnum revolver from a decent manufacturer (avoid really cheap revolvers) will do the trick on 2 and 4 legged critters.

For Field and house, l would go with a revolver,Ruger makes a very nice black hawk in 45 cal.you can use a.c.p.s or longs in it .It has a hammer block in the single action .which makes it nice and safe.

Glock model 20.
15+1 rounds of the powerful 10mm auto round. Using doubletap is hot loads, you get 41 magnum power!!!!!

Ruger GP-100, .357 Magnum (also shoots 38 Special) 4'' barrel stainless steel. Everything you could want for protection (125 gr JHP-center of mass), putting down hogs in a trap (158 gr LSWC cranial injection)

A revolver in 45 Colt would be about right. Perhaps a Ruger Blackhawk. No handgun to date has shown itself more effective for defense than the original black powder load in the 1873 Colt SAA, and hogs can at times be difficult, so the large bore is nice insurance. It would not be as sleek and easy to carry all day every day as an autoloader, but it is simple, stout, easy to maintain, and loads of fun. And it wo not jam.

For trapped hogs you need nothing more than a .22 For protection you need at least a .38
Anything a 22 will kill a 38 will also
My first choice would be a 357mag revolver with a 4 inch barrel
Use it for hunting or for carry Load it up with 357 for real hunting and defense work or down to 38 for shooting the trapped hogs

man u need a colt model 1911 it is without a doubt the best sidearm u can get it was the pistol given 2 every gi in ww2 and Korea. it was the 1 of the longest serving firearms in the history of the army it shoots a 45cal witch is awesome if ur still not conviced check it out online and ask bout it at gun shows hope this brings u 2 the right choice and good luck

Start with a .22 long rifle double action revolver with 6'' barrel. Graduate to to .357 double action revolver with 6'' barrel.
Semiautomatics r more complicated & potentially dangerous to yourself & others.
Since you're having to ask this type of question l must assume you've got no business owning any firearm until after you've completed a gun safety course & taken gun range training.
Guns r much like cars. If u did not grow up riding in a car car observing competent operation, u will likely be a dangerous driver.
