My remington 700 pss might have a stripped receiver mounting hole. Its the very forward hole where the shortest base screw goes in. Its holding up fine but Im still upset that its not perfect. Should l have it re-tapped for larger screw holes? lheard tactical rifles have larger tapped mounting holes like 8x40? Also will l have to modify my scope base mount to accommodate the new size screw?

If it is holding up fine leave it alone. Constant assembly and dis-assembly will hasten thread wear.

if it worries you enough to ask on here, you should go see a gunsmith, this might be nothing, or it could be something bad, without seeing the rifle in front of me l can not tell you much, even a photo would not work, l would need to handle the rifle to be sure.

You could do this yourself but u need to go with the most threads per inch as possible so u might want a gunsmith to do it. You might have to enlarge the hole but when u r only jumping up a fraction of an inch/millimeter so long as the threads of the new screws do not touch the sides of the base/mount holes then you're good.

The screws will fit so perfectly that they may appear to be too large for the holes. Just like dropping a new piston into a bored out engine block, very-very tight fit & u can not force it, it just goes in if u have it lined up perfectly.

l used a two piece base on my 1988 Varmint Special (.308 Remington) & there r two screws per piece & it is as solid as a rock. The problem with a one piece base is that u have no room for error on the part of either manufacturer.

Do not tighten the screws ''farmer tight'' just snug & l use a drop of blue or red thread locker (Locktite) on each screw during assembly.

Since the screws that hold a base to the receiver r there to hold just the scope, & the scope is not used as a handle, the sheer strength is the only factor they consider. If u were dragging the rifle through 1,000 yard stalks where vines were constantly getting snagged between the scope & rifle & u just yanked the rifle through the vines to break the vines then u might need a tougher screw of larger dimensions. And of course a tougher scope.

Good Luck!

screws r generly softer an loose threads just replace or swap out with other look at threads dont over tighten little lockset & tight with no over tight XXXXX l like some but didnt the pullin thru vines part pokin thru yes pullin either shot bad or loose a foot, after my screw up on pullin slugs last nite just readin a little more detail not critisizn just noted it funny part was l use the scope for handle on 700 250 an bla only 2 that balance good the farmer tight is insult though thats from workin for living not key punchin

CactiJoe is spot on.

To add to his good points. u could try & use a sewing needle or pin & see if u have any shaved off screw threads left in the receiver mount hold. You might have debris from a slightly misaligned (or wrong thread count) screw clogging up the threads in the hole. You might be able to chip any debris loose & then start with a fresh screw.

If you're not planning to change out the mounts once set up, & if u have enough thread to get even a little bite, red Loctite (high strength threadlocker) will keep the connection secure as long as u want. Use the blue Loctite (medium strength threadlocker) if u plan on swapping things out periodically. No need to retap the threads until there is almost nothing left to grip.
