l am thinking of buying a mini 14 online and l want a newer, post 2005 model due to their improved accuracy. Are there any visual ways to tell between the newer and older models?

Yeah, but you have to saw the stock at the drop and count the rings. Seriously tho, the dealer you purchase one from will have that info for you.

For one thing, the new rifles will have a nice rubber buttplate, whereas the older ones will have smooth plastic. The new ones will have a protected front sight; that is, there is a little metal prong on each side of the blade, whereas the older ones had a single, unprotected blade for a front sight. Yes the newer Ruger Mini 14 rifles are a 580 series rifle.. The first 3 numbers in the serial number will start with 580 and higher... The older Ruger Mini 14 rifles have a 180 or higher number and if l am not mistaken dont go higher than a 185 as the first 3 numbers...
