You mean the cartridge case. The bullet is the thing that squirts out of the barrel real fast.

In a bolt rifle the extractor pulls the case from the chamber when the bolt is pulled back. When the case hits the ejector it pops out.

After the bullet is fired, the bolt is cycled manually. The EXTRACTOR pulls the shell straight back then it hits the EJECTOR which flings it out the action.

The extractor on the bolt extracts the spent casing, the ejector ejects it, it might look like one smooth operation but it is actualy 2 seperate functions working together in synchronicity.

If you're referring to a spent cartridge, when you pull the bolt back, the extractor catches the rim of the cartridge and as you pull the bolt back, the extractor pulls the shell out of the chamber, then the ejector kicks the shell out.

There is a claw extractor that will pull the casing out of the chamber and when the casing gets so far back, it will contact an ejector to kick the casing out of the extractor and therefore the action and it will be ready to be bolted forward stripping a new round and locking it into the chamber.
