l do not know of anywhere where an FMJ (full metal jacket) is legal for big game in US & with good reason , they wound that is why the military uses them if u kill, u knock one person out of the equation if u wound ,one down two to carry. JHP (jacketed hollow point) r generally used for soft skinned targets (varmints) JSP (jacketed soft point) best choice for deer, but with The 7.62X39mm l assume that is what u mean when u say SKS ammo u r going to have to be very careful about placing ur shot this does not have a lot of knockdown power or a very long range.

Steven is right.. The jacketed soft point would be the only choice. A hollowpoint would most likely do it is intended job and open up destroyed a large amount of usable meat in the process. The full metal jacket will cause the least amount of damage and probably pass right through.

FMJs were designed for military use. They are illegal for hunting, because they do not expand on impact, therefore it is not always considered ethical. Plus there is a chance that when it goes through the animal it will keep going and possibly hit something that was not intended. Hollow point and soft point are both legal for hunting because they expand when hitting the target, making a bigger wound, hopefully killing the animal faster.

Never use FMJ ammo for hunting. It will pass thru the animal and not do enough damage to ensure a quick humane kill and the animal can run for miles and suffer for days.
l prefer HP on light skinned critters like coyote, but for deer, hog, bear, etc etc you need to use JSP ammo to ensure a clean kill.
