So, l am probably doing something wrong, but every time l go to put a new CO2 canister in my Nighthawk, there is a loud hissing noise and the canister explodes, causing the handle to become very cold!

What would cause this and how do l fix it?

Your CO2 cartridge is not actually ''exploding''. What is happening is that your O-ring seal is damaged and is letting the CO2 escape from the chamber. Simply replace the O-ring with one of proper diameter and thickness (these can be found at any hardware store) and you're back in business. This is a common occurrence with CO2 powered pellet guns.
